About Founder Shane Barnard

UrbanKick creator, Shane Barnard, brings over 20 years of knowledge and experience to her workshops, training sessions and classes.

She specializes in strength, sports conditioning and kickboxing; utilizing interval, strength and power work in her trainings and classes. As a former dancer, Shane is equally passionate about body maintenance, flexibility and kinesthetic awareness to ensure proper technique, alignment and stability.

She studied dance during her undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon and continued her dance education at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in NYC. She took her first boxing class with Dave Ekstrom (a former Golden Glove Champion) when she moved to California in 1996, and in 1999, she expanded her training with the International Kick-Box Aerobics Federation. Her dance and boxing background blended perfectly to create the foundation for her UrbanKick class format. Shane began teaching kickboxing in 1999 and currently teaches her brand of kickboxing (as well as other class formats including strength and conditioning and HIIT) at Crunch and the University of California at Berkeley (UCB), where she is also a health coach.

Since 2003 Shane has trained dozens of kickboxing instructors for the UCB Group X program and in 2007 she started her own fitness company, UrbanKick. She recently partnered with friends to open Studio360, a fitness studio in Oakland, California and launched her UrbanKick Instructor Training program. She is a continuing education provider for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).

Shane is a former lawyer and current personal trainer, instructor, health coach, functional movement specialist and sports nutrition specialist. A former performer with dance companies, her current athletic activities include: half (and one full) marathons and obstacle course races such as the Warrior Dash, Spartan Race and Tough Mudder.
